I’ve not visited Canterbury Cathedral before. It was quite as I expected: huge, impressive, with elegant columns. What I didn’t anticipate was how warm it was inside – very welcome on an extremely cold day.

Someone wanted to make the cloister cat warm and comfortable too but I don’t think it will be back until the builders have gone.

For centuries pilgrims came to Canterbury to visit the shrine of Thomas Becket, murdered in 1170. I like the way the site of the murder is marked today: a place for quiet contemplation.
