The Windmill at Thurne

One of the windmills at Thurne, Norfolk

This is the prettiest, most photographed, windmill in Thurne.

It ceased to be used for drainage pumping in 1936, fell into disrepair and was saved from dereliction in 1949 by local man Bob Morse. He took on the mill and raised funds for its restoration, including from Messrs. Hoseasons (the local holiday company) and the Norfolk Windmills Trust. The mill was restored and given new sails in the 1960s.

There is a small, square, nondescript building further along the staithe bearing a ‘pumping station’ sign. No doubt it’s more efficient, but no one comes here to take its picture.
